Day hiking to Mt Longonot

Mt Longonot is a stratovolcano located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. It is thought to have last erupted in 1860. The name is a Maasai word meaning “Mountains of many steep ridges”. A climb up Mt Longonot is an ideal day trip from Nairobi.

DAY TRIP FROM NAIROBI – Mt. LONGONOT

The tour starts in Nairobi at 8am and the drive takes approximately 1 – 2 hrs to the main gate to Mt. Longonot. Along the corridor of Great Rift Valley, you will be driving through Italian Road which was built in 1945 by the prisoners of 2nd World War. Depending on the climate, you may stop at a certain point for a Valley view and photo taking from where you can see The Mountain very clearly. Mt. Longonot is located Northwest of Nairobi and Southeast of Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. Elevation at the gate stands 2150mts and the peak at 2780mts A.S.L.

The hike is not an easy one but is achievable by people of reasonably good fitness. The trail from the main entrance up to the crater rim is 3 km. When you are over the rim of the crater you are rewarded with the awesome sight of Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley and a feeling that it was all worthwhile.

Before making this climb you will need to acclimatize at 6000 feet. An armed ranger is your guide.  There are wild animals in the area, but not big cat family. The whole hike is only about 8–9 km long but very steep, so much so that the round trip from park gate to the Longonot Peak and back again takes around 5 hours of hiking.

After hiking you will join your safari drive at the gate, he will drive you back to Nairobi arriving early in the evening.
