Meaningful Safari in Kenya - a ten days safari

Meaningful part of this safari includes getting close to the real people who live in Africa; buying fabrics in large outdoor markets, cooking traditional dishes with natives, visiting street children where they live in the slums and see how organizations operate to help them.

The African people are a happy people and doing a safari you will see that they are ready to welcome you to their country and culture. Tourism is one of the best means of export in Africa, particularly for the poor people serving you along your Safari. This is a Meaningful Safari and a safari that makes sense.

THE SAFARI DAY BY DAY

 

On arrival you are met by your safari driver guides whom you will find waiting for you at the international arrival wing. In a distance you will notice a meeting board displayed with a name, Flamingo Safari

Day 1 – Nairobi – Kitui 

Breakfast at 7am in your guesthouse before your journey starts by driving southern wards through Nairobi Mombasa road. Before we leave Nairobi you will visit Kikomba; the second biggest open air-marked in Africa.

 

On the way you will be passing small-scale farmers, although this part of the country receives minimal rain, the climate is very favourite to Sorghum, Millet, cassava, Sweet potatoes, Oranges, Tomatoes, Onions, Papaya, Mangoes, Water melon, Pumpkins, Green grams. Maize harvest not commonly in every farm but only in some areas whereby a little bit the soil is friendly. The drive from Nairobi to Kitui town, takes about three and a half hours via Machakos town. From Machakos you proceed to Wamunyu town, which is famous from its carving historic background. The carving industry in Kenya started in this small town of Wamunyu back in 1910, at the time when hunting activities were booming business and tourism started eventually the carving business grew.

 

On arrival in Kitui town the enthusiastic faces of happy locals will greet you ready to greet you Jambo, Jambo!!! A Swahili word meaning Hello, Hello! Arriving in Kitui town you will see a small sign telling that from this point it is 7498 km to a small place Lucky Nearoset in Norway. On arrival lunch in Kitui Cottage where part of the group will check in and get their rooms. After lunch you will be taken on Sightseeing by foot by local guides. In the evening dinner at Kitui Cottage/Flamingo lodge.

Day 2 – Katulani environmental project

The day starts by visiting Katulani Secondary School for the pig- biogas- and water project. The projects are sponsored by Help to Self help in Africa. (www.selvhjelpiafrika.org). These are the only projects of their own kind in this area, and they will be used as a learning-centre by other institutions and locals.

We will also visit Daniel´s family in Kitui. They will make traditional meal and we will have a chance to meet with the locals. Here there will be different activities to learn Kenya culture. Being here you come close to the traditional way of life in Kamba land (Kamba is the tribe that dominate this region). In the evening we will sit around the bonfire and enjoy the African stars.

Day 3 – Kitui – Nairobi

After breakfast it will be time for shopping in Kitui culture centre and in Wamunyue on the way back to Nairobi. Lunch at Ngong Hills Hotel before we visit The Conquerors at Kawangware Church.

 

Dinner at Rusty Nails restaurant whereby The Conquerors will entertain the guests.

Day 4 – Lake Nakuru National Park

Breakfast will be served from 6am and 7am we leave from the guesthouse heading for Nakuru town. It will be a four-hour drive through small villages, farmland and the Rift Valley. Nakuru is the fourth largest city of Kenya and is situated 1858 m above the sea level. After check-in at the hotel we drive to the main gate of Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru is a salt-water lake and is the home of thousands of pink flamingos. You may also see the lion, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, wide rhino and more than 400 spices of birds! We will have picnic lunch in the park.

Day 5 – Nakuru – Lake Victoria

We leave the hotel at 7am after having breakfast. We proceed to Kisumu town by the Lake Victoria. We will have our picnic lunch by the roadside. The safari will pass through the main Kenyan Tea-land. The drive will be a four hours drive. Kisumu is the third largest city in Kenya with appr 400 000 inhabitants. After check-in at the hotel it will be possible to have a rest at the poolside or have a swim. From the hotel there is a beautiful view of the Lake Victoria and perhaps you will experience the most beautiful sunset ever.

Day 6 – Kisumu Excursion

Early in the morning (by 5.30 o clock) we will leave the hotel and get in to the small boats, which will take us on sail along the Lake Victoria. We will see the sunrise from the boats, an unbelievable experience. There is no place with more beautiful sunrise and sunset than Kisumu. The local guides from The Palicon tours will tell us about the life in and around the lake. The lake has been a victim of a huge environmental crime and the lakes future is very uncertain. We will have a picnic breakfast along the lakeshore, returning back to the hotel at lunchtime.

 

You will meet The Drummer boy Kevin. A young and very talented boy supported from Norway with 7 drums. Today we will make dinner together with the locals so you learn to cook traditional Kenya food. Party together with a local family.

Day 7 – Kisumu - Maasai Mara

Today we have a long drive. Ready with our packed lunch boxes from the hotel, we will leave early in the morning and will pass through small villages and we will see a lot of beautiful nature. Side to side you will be seeing small-scale farmers in this very densely populated Kisii district. We will have our lunch in the wilderness, then after lunch we proceed to Maasai Mara National Reserve. Maasai Mara is the largest conservation of animals in Kenya and in the northern part of the Tanzanian Serengeti National Park. We will have a short afternoon game-drive and we will have two nights in a tented camp in the wilderness. The camp has permanent tents with real beds, water toilets and shower. Through the night you may hear the sounds of the wild animals, which are close to the camp. They never become uninvited guests.

Day 8 – Maasai Mara Full Day

Today will be a full day game-drive in The Maasai Mara National Reserve. You will have a picnic-lunch in the wilderness. We will be at the boarder to Tanzania and you can pass the boarder without filling the normal papers. You will see the Mara River with hippos and crocodiles. In The Maasai Mara National Reserve there is almost a “Big five” guarantee! In the evening we will sit around the bonfire and talk about the exciting life in the wilderness.

Day 9 – Enkolong Tented Camp – Nairobi

Morning breakfast in your Camp and check out, proceed on a morning game drive until 10 am then drive back to Nairobi arriving early in the afternoon. We will have late lunch in Karen coffee garden, after lunch you will visit Karen Farm and Kazuri beads factory. Then proceed to Scripture Mission where you will meet Kikomba tailor with suits ready for your confirmation. Also you will have day room for final preparations and clothes change before you proceed to Italian Restaurant downtown for your dinner. After dinner your safari driver will drive to the airport for your international flight back home.
